What is a Double-Keyed Crank Hub?
Failed or spun crank hubs have been reported throughout the S55 community on a regular basis, which has lead to valid concerns of the integrity of the factory hub, bolt and sprocket assembly. If a crank hub fails or spins it will cause the engine valve timing to skip or jump, potentially causing engine damage or failure.
We have seen several of these through our workshop, we highly recommend fixing the crank hub issue for any engine that has completed over 60,000km and is used on track days or hard downshifting.
SSR's new double-keyed and two-piece crank hub has fast become known as the reliable alternative to the factory design.
Double-Keyed Locking Assembly design locks the valve timing chain sprocket and the oil pump chain sprocket together to prevent one from spinning independent of the other. The oil pump sprocket is also pinned to the crankshaft nose. This Double-Keyed design ensures the sprockets will not rotate out of position.
Two-Piece Design. The original crank hub assembly is made up of three pieces; the hub, the engine timing sprocket, the oil pump sprocket and the crankshaft bolt. The SSR Performance design combines the hub and timing sprocket into one machined piece. This ensures that as long as the bolt is properly tightened to the crank the timing sprocket is always in sync with the crank. This acts as added insurance to the double-keyed design mentioned above.
WHY DO I NEED IT?
If your BMW M3 F80, M4 F82, F83 or M2 Competition F87 S55 is track used, modified or heavily modified installing the SSR Crank Hub is highly recommended. A spun crank can lead to engine failure with repair costs in excess of $20,000 or if slightly luckier broken down until vehicle is sent back to workshop for the crank hub to be replaced anyway and the engine retimed.
The SCH (Spun Crank Hub) failure has been seen on both stock and modified S55 engines. If you are modifying your car, doing track work or driving hard then upgrading the crank hub in your S55 powered M car is a fail safe you will not regret.
NOTE: Drilling holes into the crankshaft using the supplied specialty drill bit is required to mate the locking pins with the crankshaft.

INSTALLATION:
Installation of any crank hub solution is extensive and must be carried out by highly qualified technicians only, the oil pan, valve covers, subframe, steering and suspension must be removed and re-installed. BMW-Specific specialty tools are required in order to set the engine cam and valve timing. Drilling holes into the crankshaft using the supplied specialty drill bit is required to mate the locking pins with the crankshaft.
We have done a number of these at BM Performance Centre.
WARNING: Improper installation may cause irreversible engine damage.
INSTALLATION TIPS:
- This is a great time to upgrade your turbos as everything is out of the way.
- For high output or high km builds it is also a great time to consider replacing the rod bearings, everything is out of the way and ready to go for a very quick and easy installation.
- Many components, bolts and hardware are single-use only, please ensure no bolts are re-used during this installation that should not be.
- The oil system must be primed prior to re-starting the engine due to the crankcase being opened up and pressure being released.
