WHAT IS A CRANK HUB?
Issues relating to the standard three-piece crank hub on the S55 engine are widely known, but these are fully addressed with the installation of the MMR Performance one-piece billet crank hub and capture plate.
The OE units friction plate are known to slip, causing the timing to alter enough that piston-to-valve contact can occur and, if not totally standard and within the warranty period, leaves owners with a very expensive repair bill! We have seen several of these through our workshop, we highly recommend fixing the crank hub issue for any engine that has completed over 60,000km and is used on track days or hard downshifting.
MMR developed a product that would ensure owners of standard power outputs have complete peace of mind, as much as those that wish to increase the power and torque output without having to worry; MMR have engineered one of the most comprehensive solution on the market and at one of the most compelling price points.
The MMR Performance one-piece crank hub is machined from billet EN36 that's been heat-treated with a 0.75mm case hardening, making it incredibly strong and durable.
The one-piece design ensures the friction plates can't slip and with a new crank bolt tightened appropriately, this alone delivers a substantial improvement in reliability versus the OE version.
For the ultimate solution, which then also removes the possibility for this bolt to be able to loosen, we recommend an additional billet aluminium capture plate that securely houses the whole head of the crank bolt, making it near impossible for it to come undone.
Careful design has also allowed MMR to develop a solution that's easy to install compared to some other products as there's no drilling or modification required to the OE crankshaft, which saves you time and ultimately money, too.
WHY DO I NEED IT?
If your BMW M3 F80, M4 F82, F83 or M2 Competition F87 S55 is track used, modified or heavily modified installing the MMR Crank Hub is highly recommended. A spun crank can lead to engine failure with repair costs in excess of $20,000 or if slightly luckier, broken down until vehicle is sent back to workshop for the crank hub to be replaced anyway and the engine retimed.
The SCH (Spun Crank Hub) failure has been seen on both stock and modified S55 engines. If you are modifying your car, doing track work or driving hard then upgrading the crank hub in your S55 powered M car is a fail safe you will not regret.

INSTALLATION:
BM Performance has extensive experience in installing thgese crank bubs including on our own F80 M3 track car. Installation of any crank hub solution is extensive and must be carried out by highly qualified technicians only, the oil pan, valve covers, subframe, steering and suspension must be removed and re-installed. BMW-Specific specialty tools are required in order to set the engine cam and valve timing.
WARNING: Improper installation may cause irreversible engine damage.
INSTALLATION TIPS:
- This is a great time to upgrade your turbos as everything is out of the way.
- For high output or high km builds it is also a great time to replace the rod bearings, everything is out of the way and ready to go for a very quick and easy installation.
- Many components, bolts and hardware are single-use only, please ensure no bolts are re-used during this installation that should not be.
- The oil system must be primed prior to re-starting the engine due to the crankcase being opened up and pressure being released.
